Jerez already had a Jockey Club in 1868: horse racing on the Llanos de Caulina

Did you know…? More than a century and a half ago, Jerez was already holding horse races organised by its own Jockey Club, on a racecourse built on the Llanos de Caulina.

The bond between Jerez and the horse goes back a long way. So far, in fact, that the city already had a racing club in the 19th century: the Jockey Club de Jerez was founded in 1868, linked to the horse races held on the Llanos de Caulina, the plains of Caulina.

Racing at Caulina

On the Llanos de Caulina, Jerez came to have facilities built for horse racing. A few years after the club was founded, in 1873, a new racecourse was built there. Its race days are now part of the city's equestrian history.

More than 150 years on

More than 150 years have passed since those first races, and the horse is still an inseparable part of the identity, culture and history of Jerez. It is the same tradition carried on today by the Horse Fair, the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art, the Military Stud and the Yeguada de la Cartuja.
